Yahoo has recently extended its presence in the mobile software scene with the release of two new mobile apps. Yahoo weather and email apps are now available for the top 3 mobile platforms, and Yahoo users can finally enjoy all the services they love from one smartphone or tablet.

Yahoo Weather

The Yahoo Weather app takes an interactive approach to mobile weather notifications by including scenic images of current local weather conditions. The weather images are provided by the community via a public collaboration on flickr. Users can submit local weather images to be categorized and added to the database. The app then displays geographically appropriate images based on weather conditions in the area.

Yahoo’s new weather software is also optimized to reduce battery use, and improve overall performance on today’s top mobile devices. The software is regularly updated by the Yahoo mobile development team to address bugs, new features and enhancements.

Equipped with a full-screen weather interface, home screen widget and alert notifications, the Yahoo Weather app delivers a full featured mobile weather solution for iOS, Android and Blackberry devices.

Yahoo Email

Yahoo has also extended their mobile software collection with an intuitive email app for mobile devices. Default or custom created folders can all be managed from the Yahoo Email app, and it also features integration with the Yahoo Messenger app.

Smart folders allow Yahoo email users to quickly send messages to recipients on their contact list, and easily add or remove custom folders right from the app. Users can manage emails, contacts and folders from just one piece of software, and they can also access messenger from the easy-to-use Yahoo Email interface.

Yahoo Email also features interface optimizations specifically for tablet users. The custom alternative layout provides an improved visual experience, and the advanced triage features makes managing the inbox much faster on tablet devices.

Yahoo For Mobile

Yahoo has had an all-in-one app and mobile messenger available for sometime, but they have provided some fresh new capabilities with their weather and email apps. Yahoo’s mobile software is available on Google Play for Android, the App Store for iOS and Blackberry World free of charge.

Yahoo has been promising new mobile software choices for awhile now, and they’ve made good on their word with the release of their new apps for weather and email. As the race to keep up with the mobile Internet continues, Yahoo could have a lot more to offer mobile users in the next few years.

HTC has been one of the international leaders in the smart phone industry. It has capitalized very well on the latest trend on smart phones. It has been coming out with some of the best devices that you can lay your hands on. The sleek devices that come out from HTC are not exactly the most affordable ones but are one of the most advanced ones. This brand has been very consistent in its performance and that really matters in the international arena.

The top segment of HTC devices has some of the best in the industry and you can find a brilliant device like the One X from HTC. But as the phone gets advanced, using it becomes complex. If you recently got yourself the HTC One X, then there are quite a few things that you have to keep in mind about the phone. There are a few tricks that can be done on the phone and they turn out to be useful.

Did you know that you could take a snapshot of the screen of your one X without the help of an external app? This is useful feature comes inbuilt and all you have to do is to press your power button along with your home button. You press these both simultaneously and your screen shot is ready.

Sometimes the phone does a little bit more than we want it to do. The automatic widget formation on the screen is one such feature. In case you have downloaded any app, after its installation, a widget will be formed. Now you can change this feature by deselecting the add auto widget option from the settings.

If you have a long list of music files or a very long contacts list, scrolling down can be quite an annoying thing to do. More than annoyance, it can waste a few seconds to reach the particular entry. But now with the One X you can use the quick scroll option. You can use two fingers on the screen with each swipe and save time.

Suppose you want to shoot something constantly with your phone’s camera, the review facility can be a pain. The phone’s camera by default lets you take a few shots and then selects the best one. This may be useful during certain intervals but if you are in for taking constant pictures, this will be a hurdle. Now you can turn this off from the camera settings and shoot constantly without being intervened.

The One X boasts of a very quick boot process. That is because of the hot boot option which is selected by default. For the phone to boot properly and completely, deselect this option and let it go though booting completely.

If you want to text or type something very urgent, then the usual keypad may not be an easy option. It is much better if you go with the trace type option which can be selected from the settings.

The HTC Sense UI has been highly appreciated but sometimes can get a few notches slower and that is bad news for HTC One X users. So make the changes from the settings and in the developer option. Reboot the phone well and feel the difference of the faster UI.

Did you know that the simple calculator on your One X can turn into the complex scientific calculator once you rotate the device into landscape mode?

Your data usage too can now be tracked and you will be warned about it in case you cross your limits as per your data plan. You can also access the device information by giving the*#*#3424#*#*key combination.

Those who use Flickr enjoy the ability to store their photos, as if they were storing their memories. Like a photo album, we keep pictures of our memories stored in Flickr so that we can never forget them. And like photo albums, we don’t want anything to happen to these memories.

While storing images and backing them up is possible online, there are ways to do the same thing from our desktop. FlickrEdit is an application that does just that and you will learn more about FlickEdit here. It is compatible with most operating systems like Windows, Linux and the Mac OS, and uses Java to run, so if you do not have Java installed in your computer, be sure to do so if you plan to use this program.

How to use FlickrEdit

Download the FlickrEdit for your operating system and run the application. As you use it, you will see a log-in button at the top-right corner of the window. Click on it and log in with your Flickr account, and since this should be your first time using the application, click on the “New User” button. Make sure you select “Write” under “Permissions” before clicking on “New User”. You will then be directed to the Flickr sign-in page. Log in with your account, and then you will be asked to grant FlickrEdit permission to access your account. Authorize the application and follow the on-screen instructions.

Once you have accessed your Flickr account, all the images you have uploaded until the latest day will appear, meaning you are ready to download and backup either all or your selected photos. Select the images you want to backup, and then click on “Backup Selected” to move to the next step. On this next step, you can choose to create the backup in either your hard drive or through the CD or DVD. If you choose to place the backup in the hard drive, you can choose to place it as is or compress it into a zip file. Make your choice and click “Start Backup” to begin.

One other neat feature FlickrEdit has is the ability to upload your images straight to your Flickr account. It’s an easy process to do. You can choose the location you want to upload the images to, as well as add in details like the photo title, a description of the photo, tags, the privacy settings of the photo, and more.

How to remove FlickrEdit

If you wish to stop using FlickrEdit, removing it is quick and easy, and can be done at any time. To do so, first sign in to Flickr, then go to “You”, then “Your Apps”, then “Apps You Are Using”. Under that tag, find the “Remove permission?” option beside FlickrEdit to revoke its permission to access your account.

And that is how to use FlickrEdit to manage and backup your Flickr photos. It is an overall convenient tool to use, as it is quick, easy and hassle free. Note that you can also use FlickrEdit to manage multiple accounts, making it even more convenient.

Google announced an update to their iOS app a few days ago. This has been responsible for Google’s market share increasing sharply. Google’s apps will no doubt always be up there among the most popular across the different mobile platforms; but at the start of 2013, their iOS apps are looking especially good.

With this update (Google Drive version 1.2.2) you can now happily upload multiple videos and photos simultaneously to the cloud. Apart from this there are some other additions: you can expect enhanced performance from Google Docs, Slides and Sheets.

If you’re an iPhone owner who also happens to use QuickOffice you will be happy to know that now you will be able to open and also save back to Google Drive. Previously there was some dissatisfaction among users as to the font support; now that too seems to have been resolved, with this update now supporting the Helvetica Neue font.

Thanks to this update you will now be able to perform cell formatting in Google Sheets. You can format cells to denote a variety of units like decimals, dates, currency and the like, with the spreadsheet feature of Google Drive. If you use a lot of spreadsheets in your work, there is even more reason to cheer: the latest update to the app will now enable you to scroll diagonally. This means you can wade thru your spreadsheets all the quicker.

There are also enhanced slideshows and animations now available for Google Slides, and you will be now able to perform pinch zoom on specific slides.

In November 2012, additional spreadsheet support for mobile was rolled out by Google Drive. The newly bequeathed native editor allows you to either create a new spreadsheet or modify a current one directly from the Google Drive app on your iPhone or iPad. If you have Sheets on your iPhone you will be able to change fonts, change the column sizes, do data sorting, and a whole lot more. You will also be able to see edits and comments by other users in real time, just as you can in the full fledged browser.

The update to Google Drive app for iOS also allows you to create a shortcut on your homescreen for the files and folders on the cloud. This means that you can access those files and folders right from the homescreen shortcuts without navigating to the app and having to open it and going to the file or folder you want to access. Again this feature will bring a huge relief to those who have tons of data stored on Google Drive.

The app works very nicely with both the iDevices; the tablet and Smartphone. In the beginning you are given 5 GB of storage on Google Drive for sharing of your files, photos and videos, as well as being able to create and modify documents in Excel, Word and PowerPoint. You can download the app from the Apple App Store; if you want you can buy an additional 25 GB space for $25.

It has been quite some time now since everybody has been noticing the “LinkedIn” feature in their hotmail accounts. The appearance of that specific feature in Hotmail is due to the integration of Windows live and Hotmail into LinkedIn, simply speaking, the two companies have become partners. Hmm, why would this happen? For gaining more audience of course! The two companies have become partners so users from both Hotmail and LinkedIn can start using both the services. The only question is: Who gets the most out of it?

Hotmail or Windows Live

Hotmail (Windows Live) is the largest E-mail provider/service in the world and is used by millions of people. Speaking in exact number, 360 million users and counting. Yes, that’s right, that’s double the users of Gmail. Hotmail is dedicated to giving a great viewing and using experience for its users and has fulfilled that target successfully.

LinkedIn

LinkedIn- well LinkedIn is the largest professional social network which has 167 million users and counting, just about the same as Gmail. The only problem with LinkedIn is that it is aimed at businesses and rarely attracts small organizations or individuals. Otherwise, LinkedIn is the best professional social website and gives user a thrilling experience. It is also one of the best places on the internet to advertise and publish your business.

Why they have become partners

That’s easy. They have become partners in order to attract more audience and expand in numbers. Just when both of the companies thought they had reached their limit and things were about to go downhill, BAM! They had the idea of partnering up, which was the right decision. Just imagine 167 million users from LinkedIn and 360 million from Hotmail and if even 50% of the users of each service start using the partner service, its win and win for everyone! That would mean at least a potential 80 million more users for Hotmail and 170 million more users for LinkedIn.

Why would the users from each service start using the partner service?

Well, to gain publicity for a product or service, you must advertise. And both these organizations have done it well. They have advertised the fellow service all over their website and have also integrated the partner service into their own consequently attracting more users for the partner service.

Golden Question: Who gets the most out of it?

That is pretty hard to say but referring to the statistics, that would be: LinkedIn. That is because Hotmail has way more users than LinkedIn which means more people will be aware of LinkedIn and more people will start using LinkedIn thanks to Hotmail than vice versa.

Is this partnership successful and beneficial?

Of course, most partnerships are successful and referring to this one, it has been relatively successful as well. Both the services have experienced an increase since this partnership and so this partnership has proved to be beneficial.

All in all, this partnership has proven to be very successful and it benefits both the services, more or less. Furthermore, by integrating each others’ service into their own, they have also ensured a bright future in their relationship. All we can do is to sit back and watch as to what happens next in this partnership.

Joomla is a customized and adaptable user management platform that currently has millions of websites built upon it such as eBay, McDonalds, Barnes and Noble and Ikea. It is a CMS (content management system) that lets you create and build your own website and online applications. Joomla offers numerous extensions and designs to help you customize your website to fit you needs.

One of the many types of Joomla extensions you can add into your website are called modules. There are five basic types of extensions that Joomla offers, the five are components, modules, plug-ins, templates and languages. The most recognized and simplest to create module is the login module, which most people use on a day to day basis.

A module is a block of codes that pulls information from your websites database (content.) Modules can be placed in any defined position. Modules can be created for a variety of reasons; some examples are a calculator, a tooltip, a slideshow, or a link to social media like twitter and Facebook.

With Modules a website manager can change its position on a page and its location. For example with a login module, you only want it to be on page one, so that is the where you position it. If you don’t hide it on the other pages it will be visible and probably highly irritating to those who use your website

The simplest way to create a module on Joomla! is to follow these basic steps.

Set up the module:

1. Go to “Extensions-Module Manager”

2. Go to module “Main Menu”

3. Check the box beside the title

4. Choose “Copy”

5. New module is created called “Copy of Main Page”

6. Make sure the enabled tab is set on yes

7. Click on “Copy of Main Menu”

8. Type in your title

9. Show title: yes or no

10. Enabled: yes or no

11. Position: type in new module name

12. Order: Copy of Main Menu

13. Access level: public

14. Field Menu Assignment: make sure you select “All”

15. Save the module

Create the content page

1. Go to Article Manager and create a new article

2. Enter text into article “(loadposition____)”

3. Make sure loadposition matches module position created in step A11

4. Save the article

Test it

Very simple thing to do, just go to your website and see what pops up and where, and then if necessary you can edit your created modules.

Downloadable Modules

Not every client wants to create their own modules, or has the time to create lengthy modules. Joomla can help by offering a variety of downloadable modules to help clientele maximize the creativity and vision of their website. Modules like mini event calendar, Genius slider and HWD YouTube video Box are just a few samples of these tools websites can have.

Everyone has their reasons for closing their Gmail account. However, it can be a longer process than anyone would think. Especially when the site does all it can to make you change your mind. If for some reason, you really do want to delete your Gmail account, or even wonder how deleting an email account works, read on.

To start the deletion process, go to Google Account Process, then open the Products page. Under Your Products, click Edit, then from there you will see Delete a Product. There, select Remove Gmail permanently. One thing to note: through Delete a Product, you can choose to Close account and delete all services and info associated with it to delete your entire Google account, including search history, and other services like Google Docs.

From there, make sure you check the choice that says Yes, I want to permanently delete <insert e-mail address here>@gmail.com and remove it from my Google account. After that, enter an email address different from the one associated with the one you are deleting under New primary email address. Keep in mind that Gmail may have already entered a new secondary address you used when first creating the Gmail account, the alternative email address becomes your new username for Google, and that you should enter an email address to which you have access to, as you need it to complete the deletion process.

Enter your Gmail password under Current password, then click REMOVE GMAIL. You will receive an email from <accounts-noreply@google.com> entitled “Gmail Removal Confirmation” in the new email address you specified as your new one. Follow the deletion link in the email then type your Gmail password under Password, then click Verify. From that point on, the only thing left to do would be to inform everyone you know about your new email account, as emails sent to the recently-deleted account will be returned with a delivery failure message. Keep in mind that once you click Verify, you will no longer be able to undo it, so think long and hard before you really want to get rid of your Gmail account.

And that’s how the Gmail deletion process goes. It’s surprisingly long and would require some of your time to accomplish, possibly done on purpose in case you want to change your mind somewhere along the way. Also, in case you want to retrieve the account you just deleted, Google will work with you to help get the old account back, but you have to inform them as quickly as possible; after a few weeks’ time, deleted accounts will no longer be retrievable. It would also take around 60 days for the residual data of deleted messages and accounts to be deleted from Google’s servers. And even if you do manage to recover the Gmail account, only the username would remain intact. In any case, be very sure if you want to delete your Gmail account, as it would take quite the effort to not only delete it, but also to get it back.

Whether you own an iPhone or an Android-powered phone, you’ll have plenty of options available to you from their respective markets. For example, both iTunes and Google Play let you create wishlists to track the content that you would like to purchase in the future, and physical gift cards for the two stores are available at brick-and-mortar retailers. The differences between the two have more to do with the amount of multimedia content than the general function of either store.

Apps

As of October 2012, the Play market offers 700,000 apps, which is as many as the iTunes Store. Apps range from tip calculators to games to CAD model display tools. A similar number and variety of apps exists for iPad or iPhone owners. Thousands of these apps are free, while you can purchase apps that aren’t available for free or to remove ad support. For example, free versions of the popular Angry Birds games are available in both stores, but they show ads, which you can only remove by purchasing the premium app. Apps often costs as little as $.99 in either market.

Multimedia

The iTunes Store and Play market both offer multimedia, including television episodes, books and music, for your enjoyment. Apple has had more time to perfect its model, and the company even works with musicians and record companies to organize releases via iTunes. Apple offers more audio and video content than Google; however, you might prefer Google because you can get free songs if you use Google Play for music and enter your payment information. You can choose to rent or buy movies and television shows at either market, and both offer books and magazines for readers

Usage

Apple and Android devices include an app that connects to the market, enabling you to download apps directly from your phone. Only the Android Play app lets you download multimedia from your device. Separate apps are required on your iPhone. Both stores have websites you can browse to learn more about apps and other content. You can push content to your phone from your computer; however, Apple only provides an iTunes preview in the browser. If you wish to download apps or media, you must launch iTunes on your computer. Music purchased from Google Play automatically adds to your library on every connected device. Settings on iCloud or your iPhone let you sync purchases to other devices, but this does not automatically happen the first time.

Notable Differences

The iTunes Store functions separately from the Apple Store; however, you can buy physical devices such as the Nexus 4, Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 directly from Google in the Play store. iTunes has a Genius sidebar that will make recommendations based on the content already in your library, which may better help you to find new content. iTunes does not let you stream purchased movies or shows from your computer to other iOS devices, but the store tends to have more high-definition options than Google Play. For example, fairy tale movie “Mirror Mirror” is only available in HD from iTunes.

While 3G has proved to be very popular and offers a reasonably fast connection for most mobile phone users, the advent of 4G is set to overtake this. It is expected that this is going to revolutionise the way in which mobile phones connect. So what is 4G?

Overview

4G is the fourth generation of connectivity technology and has been designed to do a lot more than 3G. The original definition of 4G is a speed of between 100Mbps and 1Gbps although in most cases this has been downgraded. There are companies that have improved on the 3G technology and have labelled it as 4G although it does not actually fit into the official definition. There are two systems – LTE and WiMax – which have been designed to offer better speeds than 3G. It is now normal for any system which is faster than 3G to be described as 4G.

Other Advantages of 4G

4G is a radio system which is advanced and is based on internet protocol, so that data is passed around in packets. The technology is used for all data which is going through the mobile phone. The network is also able to support more users so that everyone can expect their whole mobile phone experience to be faster and smoother because network saturation will be less of an issue. The phone will respond much more quickly to commands and users will be able to move seamlessly around the internet.

There are also a number of other advantages to a 4G network. A 4G network has a wider coverage so that operators can run the system at a lower cost as they need fewer cell towers. A 3G tower will be able to give up to 100 users a strong signal, but with 4G LTE technology this number increases to around 400 people.

Promises for Rural Phone Users

The hope is that 4G technology will be able to give good coverage in rural areas where 3G has not previously been on offer. High speed internet has often been denied to rural areas. There will also be increased bandwidth with 4G and the roll-out should be much faster. Promises, promises!

Why Now?

Some users may be wondering why it has taken so long for 4G to reach the UK. One of the reasons is that some networks have been waiting for signal to be freed up as the analogue TV signal is switched off. As this happens 4G can be moved into these areas and there have already been successful trials with 4G in some areas. However, it is expected that the roll-out will be a long process as the operators bid for bandwidth.

When and Where?

4G is being launched by EE and a number of cities have already been trialled with this technology. There are plans for around 90% of the country to have 4G access by the end of 2014 and this will bring with it speeds that are up to five times faster than those seen with 3G. A number of different smartphones have been given this technology and more will be taking advantage of it as time goes on. Users will be able to enjoy faster mobile phone usage and will be able to benefit from everything that their phone offers.

** Author Bio: Phil Turner plans to buy an Android tablet and connect to a 3G network in the near future, but has serious doubts whether Irish 4G will ever roll out away from the Cork and Dublin.

QR codes are everywhere and part of the reason is the widespread use of smartphones. Of the many things about the iPhone that were revolutionary, one was the ability to scan and analyse information from QR codes. Here are the 4 best QR code scanning apps for iOS devices.

i-nigma 4

The i-nigma 4 may not be the most popular QR code scanner app for iOS devices, but that is not due to lack of trying. The i-nigma 4 hosts a variety of customization options, right down to letting you choose the sound that is played when a QR codes has been scanned. You can grab information right away or selectively save your searches in the app’s history to access later. The app also allows you to share scanned QR codes via Facebook and Twitter. The only annoying part is that you have to exit the app and access the i-nigma 4 website through the browser if you wish to do so.

QR App

As far as QR code scanning apps for iOS is concerned, it does not get any simpler than the QR App. The point-and-shoot scanning interface is as simple as it gets; simply point your device at the QR code and the app will auto-focus, recognize and scan the QR code without the user having to push any buttons. Like i-nigma 4, QR App also allows you to save a search history. However, unlike the i-nigma 4, you simply cannot grab information from the code. If the app detects a web link or phone number in the code, it will automatically open up the phone or browser. Some may find this feature to be very helpful while others, who prefer control over ease of use, will find it a bit annoying.

Tap Reader

Tap Reader is a wonderful app that is feature-packed and has its own ever-growing fan base. The best feature in the app is the ability to scan multiple QR codes one after the other. In other apps, you end up in the gallery every time a QR code is scanned. However in Tap Reader, you can eliminate that pesky annoyance and scan multiple QR codes in a row. The app also allows you to create an account that lets you store your search history online, besides the local history on the device. Small customization options, like the ability to turn off sound and vibrations when scanning, make Tap Reader really stand out.

QR Reader

QR Reader is just about as good as a QR code scanning app can get. While it does the usual things like other apps, including having a search history, it also has a number of features that are unique to it. A custom QR code can incorporate different kinds of information. QR Reader allows you to pick and choose exactly what you wish to do with the code and which apps you want to use to complete an action. All links are opened in an in-built browser and, unlike the i-nigma 4, you can share QR codes on Facebook and Twitter without having to exit the app.

Every app has its own advantages and drawbacks. However, you will always be able to find a QR code scanning app that suits your needs and preferences.
